Raspberries

Primocane (everbearing) Raspberries - The following bear fruit on first year stems:

Rubus 'Anne's Yellow' ANNE'S EVERBEARING YELLOW RASPBERRY

3 to 4 ft. (Zone 4) An everbearing primocane golden raspberry variety. Large fruit with an excellent flavor. Disease resistant. Plant 3 feet apart.

 

Rubus 'Jaclyn Red' JACLYN EVERBEARING RED RASPBERRY

5 ft. (Zone 3) A everbearing primocane variety that produces delicious berries good for fresh eating, jams, jellies, and desserts. Disease and pest resistant. Cold tolerant.

Rubus 'Niwot' NIWOT BLACK RASPBERRY

3 to 4 ft. (Zone 3) The first primocane black raspberry on the market, 'Niwot' was developed by Peter Tallman in Colorado.  Produces fruit in fall, which ripens in late August till Frost; as well as in early summer.  A vigorous, highly productive variety that has shiny fruit of good quality.  Requires trellising. 

 

Rubus 'Polana' POLANA EVERBEARING RED RASPBERRY

3 to 4 ft. (Zone 3) An everbearing primocane red raspberry with large, glossy berries and good flavor.  Ripens early.  Hardy, compact plants do best with high fertility.  From Poland.  Plant 3 ft. apart. 

 

Floricane (summer-bearing) Raspberries - The following bear fruit on 2-year-old stems:

Rubus 'Boyne' BOYNE RED RASPBERRY

4 to 6 ft. (Zone 3) A floricane red raspberry that is vigorous, erect, and sturdy.  Excellent for freezing, canning, or desserts.  Highly productive. 

 

Rubus 'Bristol Black' BRISTOL BLACK RASPBERRY

3 to 4 ft. (Zone 4) A floricane variety that forms large glossy fruits that are very tasty!  A great performer that's hardy and disease resistant. 

 

Rubus 'Jewel Black' JEWELL BLACK RASPBERRY

24 to 30" (Zone 5) A floricane black raspberry that is very productive with firm, glossy black fruit. Excellent choice for use in jams and jellies. Ripens June to October. Does best in full sun with a loamy soil. Plant at least 3 feet apart.

 

Blackberries

Rubus 'Chester' CHESTER THORNLESS BLACKBERRY

3 to 4 ft. (Zone 5) Developed by the USDA in 1985, a thornless, semi-erect variety with good resistance to disease.  Fruit are large with great flavor.  The hardiest and most productive of the thornless blackberries.  Great for wine-making.  Self-pollinating.

Grapes

Vitis 'Concord Seedless' CONCORD SEEDLESS GRAPE

A staple of grape species now is seedless! Ripens late September. Delicious for fresh eating, jam, juice, and jelly. A reliable producer and vigorous grower. Needs a well-drained area.  Trim in February-March, when the plant is dormant, because fruit is produced on new growth.

 

Vitis 'Himrod' HIMROD SEEDLESS GRAPE

Very early ripening green seedless variety for fresh eating or making raisins. Ripens in late August, 1-month earlier than Concord. Abundant clusters of small, firm, crisp, and sweet greenish-white seedless berries. Excellent flavor and vigor. Needs sun in a well-drained area.

 

Vitis 'Somerset' SOMERSET SEEDLESS GRAPE

(Zone 4)  Very flavorful red seedless grape that has a hint of strawberry flavor.  Clusters are compact with medium berries.  Vigorous grower.  Used for juice, jelly, and fresh eating.  Trim in February-March, when the plant is dormant, because fruit is produced on new growth.  

Currant

Ribes 'Perfection' PERFECTION CURRANT

5 to 6 ft. (Zone 3) A multi-stemmed, bushy, upright plant with average red colored fruit. Fruits ripen in early to mid fall. Once the fruit colors, let them hang for 3 weeks. Used for fresh eating, jellies, sauces, and pies. Prune in late fall.

 

Gooseberry

Ribes 'Pixwell' PIXWELL GOOSEBERRY

(Zone 4) Beautiful light green berries turn rose-pink when ripe.  Makes great pies and preserves.  Leaves turn an beautiful shade of purple for fall.  Prefers part-sun locations. 

 

Strawberries

Fragaria 'Albion' ALBION EVERBEARING STRAWBERRY

(Zone 3) An ever-bearing cultivar with large, high-quality fruit. Fruit is long and conical with an excellent flavor. Resists verticillium wilt, crown rot, and anthracnose. Prefers sun in a rich, well-drained soil.

 

Fragaria 'Early Glow' EARLY GLOW STRAWBERRY

(Zone 3) Ripens early in mid to late spring. Good for jams, jellies, and fresh eating. Prefers sun in a rich, well-drained soil. Fast growth rate. Mulch in fall for winter.

 

Fragaria 'SURE CROP' SURE CROP STRAWBERRY

(Zone 4) A dependable, high-yielding, June-bearing variety. Ideal for canning and freezes well. Deep red berries with a rich and sweet flavor. Prefers sun in a rich, well-drained soil.

 

Elderberries

Sambucus 'Nova' NOVA ELDERBERRY

One of the best ornamental edibles one can grow. Large fruits produce high yields of nutritious berries in mid to late summer. Grows fast and attracts butterflies. Good for jams and pies. Tolerant of most any condition. Cook fruit before eating.

 

Sambucus 'John's' JOHN'S ELDERBERRY

A native to North America with highly nutritious, dark purplish-red fruits in large clusters. The berries are sweet with a hint of dry tangy flavor. Fall color is a red-orange. Grows fast and attracts butterflies. Good for jams and pies. Tolerant of most any condition. Cook fruit before eating.

 

Blueberries

Popular ornamental fruit bearing shrub with glossy green leaves that turn bright red, orange, or yellow fall colors.  Needs acidic soil for best production and livability.  Plant in full-sun to light-shade. 

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Bluecrop' BLUECROP BLUEBERRY

4 to 6 ft. (Zone 4)  A widely-known adaptable variety, 'Bluecrop' is high-yielding and produces long harvests.  Fruit is light-blue and very good to eat. Ripens in early August. Need another variety (Duke, Patriot, or Blueray) in order to produce berries.  Red fall color. 

 

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blueray' BLUERAY BLUEBERRY

4 to 5 ft. (Zone 3-7)  A long-established variety with high quality dessert-style blueberries.  Bright red to yellow fall color.  Fruit is light-blue and very good to eat, ripens in early August.  Needs another variety (Duke, Patriot or Bluecrop) in order to produce berries.

 

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Bluegold' BLUEGOLD BLUEBERRY

4 to 5 ft. (Zone 4)  Medium to large fruit are sweet and delicious.  Compact and high-yielding variety.  Needs another variety (Duke, Patriot, Blueray, and Bluecrop) in order to produce berries.  Yellow fall color. 

 

Vaccinium corymbosum 'Patriot' PATRIOT BLUEBERRY

4 to 5 ft. (Zone 4)  Selected for it's cold hardiness, 'Patriot' produces large fruits that are light-blue and very good to eat.  Ripens in late July. Need another variety (Duke, Bluecrop, or Blueray) in order to produce berries.  Orange-red fall color.
