Clematis / Virgin’s Bower

Very popular vine with large showy blooms up to 6-8 inches across. Flowers are available in many colors and bloom times. Climbs by wrapping its petioles around a support. Plant in a well-drained site with organic soil. Vine loves sun, but the root zone needs to be shaded.



8-10 ft. (Zone 5) Grow on trellis or similar support.  Best in full sun and well-drained soil.  Mulch or shade root zone. Blooms May, June and September.  Pink ruffle-edged petals with a deep red bar and gold anthers.

Clematis terniflora (paniculata) SWEET AUTUMN CLEMATIS

10-20 ft. (Zone 5) September-October this plant produces scented white flowers that are smaller than other varieties of Clematis.

Clematis x Jackmanii ‘Superba’  JACKMAN’S SUPERBA CLEMATIS

10-12 ft. (Zone 4)  Improved form of ‘Jackmanii’, ‘Jackmanii Superba’ displays more profuse, slightly larger flowers of velvet purple. Blooming late spring-early fall.


Hydrangea anomala subsp. Petiolaris CLIMBING HYDRANGEA

(Zone 4) Foliage is a rich dark green color. Large white fragrant lacecap-like flowers appear in late June or early July and bloom over an extended period of time. Climbs by aerial rootlets and will grow in sun but prefers partial shade.

Wisteria frutescens ‘Amethyst Falls’  AMETHYST FALLS TREE WISTERIA

(Zone 5)  North American native vine with showy purple-blue flowers.  Blooms in late spring and sporadically through the summer.  Likes full sun and regular feeding and watering.
