Carpinus caroliniana AMERICAN HORNBEAM or IRONWOOD

Zone: 3     Height: 20-30 ft.     Width: 20-30 ft.
Small to medium multi-stemmed slow growing tree with a flat-topped spreading crown.  Bark is a smooth slate-gray and is irregularly fluted like the appearance of muscle. Leaves are dark green turning yellow in fall.  Also known as Musclewood, Blue Beech, and Water Beech because of the similairity of the bark to the Beech tree.
